If you’d like to learn more about the basics of oil and gas, OERA’s upcoming Oil & Gas 101 webinar offers a free and easy way to expand your knowledge during a fast-paced and focused session led by a local expert.
Presenting the session is Natasha Morrison, geophysicist with Nova Scotia’s Department of Energy & Mines (NSDEM).
“I’ll provide a brief overview of the history of the oil and gas industry – the first use of oil and the first well ever drilled internationally – then focus in on Canada and Nova Scotia. I’ll also talk about the industry as a whole, the science behind oil and gas, what petroleum is and what the aspects of a petroleum system are – all of the elements that need to be in place in both time and space to be able to create traps and accumulate hydrocarbon,” she says. “I’ll then move into exploration and how a company moves from choosing a basin, to getting a fundamental understanding of specific areas they might want to focus on and then to looking at specific prospects or places they want to drill and what risk is involved.”
The Oil & Gas 101 webinar will provide an overview of petroleum geology, drawing on examples from the exploration and development work in offshore Nova Scotia. This online event will be of interest to anyone who would like to become more knowledgeable about oil and gas exploration. This includes anyone working in different areas of the energy industry, including those who are focused on other areas such as finance or renewables.
Morrison says she hopes the session will, “Lead people to become more knowledgeable about oil and gas and the impact it has had on Nova Scotia.” She hopes participants come away from the session understanding, “The science behind how hydrocarbons are generated and the decisions that go into drilling for them.”
Morrison has been a member of the Petroleum Resource Development team with NSDEM since 2017. She has also served as a Dalhousie University research assistant with a focus on Source Rock, as a project manager for the Natural Resources Canada-funded Gas Seepage Project, and as the Conference Administrator for the 2018 Conjugate Margins Conference. She has completed internship postings with Devon Energy, Husky Energy and Repsol. Natasha holds both an MSc and a BSc (First Class Honours) in Earth Science from Dalhousie University and during her studies was awarded an internship through the OERA-NSDEM Graduate Student Internship Program. She is an active volunteer, holding several roles with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG).
